Symphony Chooses Barefoot to Bring Stories to Life for Little Ones!

I was thrilled to hear that three Barefoot titles, Hidden Hippo, Elusive Moose, and I Dreamt I Was a Dinosaur, have been chosen by the Canton, Ohio Symphony for a series of young children's concerts being given this winter. Launched in 2010, the series known as 'SymphonyLand', introduces young children to the instruments of the orchestra one trio at a time. Last year, the debut year, the Bear series was selected by the Symphony. Clearly, Ohio has some influential Barefoot lovers!

A 'SymphonyLand' journey begins with performances by the string trio, then the woodwind trio followed by the brass trio. The series is complete with a performance by the entire orchestra at the Kinder Concert. Built around a children's storybook, each program incorporates Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and/or Math concepts while engaging young audience members with the beautiful sounds of live music.

"We are so excited to be offering these new programs," says Lisa Boyer, Director of Education for the Canton Symphony. "These books are exquisitely illustrated and our musicians do a fantastic job engaging the children with their fine talents."

Packing Backpack, Lunchbox, and Confidence: Tips for Sending Children Off to School

It happens every autumn. Millions of young children start school for the very first time. They carry backpacks, lunchboxes, pencils, sometimes a grin on their face, but more often, a look of trepidation about what school will really be like. They wonder: Will my teacher be nice? Will I have friends? What if I can’t find my way? Who will sit with me? What will I do? What if I don’t like it? What if I miss home? What if it’s too hard?

As parents guiding our children off to start school for the first time, or to begin a new school year, we want to do all we can to ensure that they have a great experience. At the same time, we want to encourage their independence as they set off on a new journey in their development.

Kathryn White, early educator and mom of five children, as well as author of Ruby's School Walk, shares her tips to ease children's start-of-school anxiety and make this an enjoyable milestone:

Read with your child and talk about the school experience. Share with them stories about your memories of school, both the good and the less so. School is an adventure, and like all adventures, it has its ups and downs.
Help spark your child’s imaginations about school to encourage them to talk about their concerns and face their fears. You can do this through stories, books, drawings and other art forms. Ask them questions such as what they think school will be like, what they are excited about and worried about, what they think they will learn, etc. These conversations can also be had with grandparents and other favorite people in your child’s life.
Build a community in your neighborhood. It is amazing what a familiar and friendly face can do to help a child overcome their fears about going to school. As your family journeys to school each day you might see this friendly neighbor, or only see them occasionally, but it will help your child feel comfortable and safe on their trip to school.
Sit down together and create a fun map to school. Note interesting landmarks and have your child color them in or place numbers at each point. On that first morning to school, your child will be preoccupied with checking off the landmarks on their special map. The school can be drawn with welcome signs, making it a great triumph upon their arrival.
Walk with your child to school whenever possible. If you don’t live nearby, take public transport, bike or drive and get out a few blocks away and walk together. The walk will become a meaningful way to spend time together and help get the day off on the right foot.
Create traditions. Take pictures of your child in front of your home or on their way to school. Each year you can reflect back on these first day of school photos and see how much your child has grown in every way.
Know that if the first day went well or didn’t go well, there are many more days of school throughout the year and peaks and valleys along the way.

We hope your child’s first experience with school is part of their magnificent journey of growing up!

Mini Review of Some New Releases

The UPS man arrived at my doorstep this morning bearing gifts! I just got a chance to look through some of the newest Barefoot releases:

Kids' Garden is of course beautifully illustrated (it's where those flowers came from for my latest blog banner!) and is full of lots of fun ideas! How about having a race, between a snail, ant, inchworm and other insects? Turning your brother or sister into a camera?

We're Roaming in the Rainforest is another wonderful addition to the "Laurie Krebs library" and as a storyteller, I'm inspired by the animal actions for kids to do... swim like pink river dolphins, march like leaf cutter ants on parade, crouch like jaguars... And like other Laurie Krebs' books, it also provides information on the peoples of the area, as well as the animals, and there is a nice bit on conservation too!

Up, Up, Up! has simple text and is a brightly illustrated trip in a hot air balloon, with a sing-along cd! Repeated in the story, the song is:

Up, up, up, up in a balloon. Up so high I can touch the moon.

Up, up, up, sailing with the clouds. Look at me! I'm so high, I can fly, I know how.

Some tips on making the most of reading with your child:

•Choose a time and a place where you can be quiet and give your child lots of attention. Make the occasion a special one.
•Turn off any distractions such as the TV, music or the computer.
•When you are reading aloud, show your child that you are having fun!
•Involve your child. Let yourself be interrupted with questions; talk about what you think of the story and the pictures.
•When your child has started learning to read, follow the text and encourage him or her to point to the words as you go along.
•Establish a routine. Try to devote some time every day to reading.
•Take your child to your local library and involve him or her in choosing books.
•Notice what kinds of stories your child enjoys and look out for ones with similar themes.
•When you are reading aloud, praise your child for listening well and sitting still. When your child is learning to read to you, give praise and encouragement too, but be sure to gently correct your child when he or she makes mistakes.
•Help build your child's vocabulary and memory skills by supplementing reading sessions with audio books on car journeys and after meals or at bedtime. Audio books are especially helpful in building memory skills and supporting the learning of dyslexic and autistic children.
Sharing your child's journey into reading can be one of the most rewarding experiences of parenthood. You owe it to your child, and to yourself, to make it a priority in your daily life.

Inside Out Playground

The Barefoot Storyteller hopes you will join her in wishing The Inside Out Playground a fond goodbye this November....

It is with deep regret that the board has informed me that the Inside Out Playground will beclosing at the end of November due to the financial pressures of trying to stay opencoupled with the state of our local economy. The Inside Out Playground (IOP) began16 years ago as a space for children to grow and learn while playing. Over theyears, a dedicated and volunteer Board of Directors have strived to keep this uniqueplace open, available and affordable to the children of Kennebec County. They have had thousands of children and families play, dream and explore with us but the reality of maintaining a business makes it a challenge to keep the dream alive. They will be open for business as usual until November 25, 2009. Please come on in,out of the cold and bring a friend to play. Hours are: Tuesday –Friday 9:00 am-1:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. They are still booking birthday parties until November 25th.

The Inside Out Playground is located at 5 Appleton Street Waterville.

I will miss storytelling there, and very very fondly remember the times I learned and played alongside my own son when he was young there.

In case you haven't yet read this upon the Barefoot Books site:

All of the paper that we use in our books is ancient forest friendly. As the name suggests, this means that we only use paper provided by responsible suppliers running well managed forests who do not destroy ancient trees in the process of making paper.

Further, the felled timber is not replaced with an inappropriate fast-growing species (such as pine, which is unsuitable for high quality paper production on reaching maturity) but with a similar species which is given time to mature before being felled for further paper production.

All of the ink that we use is vegetable or soy based (as opposed to oil based) and our laminates and adhesives are water based (as opposed to solvent based).

Isn't that good to know?

Literacy Pledge Drives

This is how my Literacy Pledge Drive Program works:

• Parents pledge to read with their child for 15 minutes each night for 5 nights.

 • Parents collect pledges in support of their reading initiatives. They ask for a suggested donation of $1-$2 per night of reading ($5-$10 pledge). Each family’s goal is to raise at least $25. Prizes are given to families at the $25, $50, $100, $250 and $500 pledge level.

 • After all pledges are collected and the parent has read with the child for 5 days, the family can choose books from Barefoot Books for up to 50% of the total amount of their pledges.

 • Parents turn in their pledge forms, money collected, along with a filled out order form for Barefoot Books.

 • The school collects all the pledge money and places a school book order for the other 50% raised.

 • All monies raised, sponsor pledge forms and order forms (from the school and parents) are then turned into myself.

 • Once the books arrive and prizes arrive, they are dispersed to parents and the school library. As your Barefoot Ambassador, I handle everything for you.   For every dollar raised: Earns Parents .50 worth in Barefoot Books Earns the School .50 in Barefoot Books
